MLB Statistics & Team Performance

Team run production and pitching numbers, recent form and head-to-head records — the statistical base of every Sportslyx MLB breakdown, refreshed daily through the season.

Team level

MLB Team Statistics

The team-level numbers Sportslyx reads before every MLB game: what each one measures, why it matters in baseball, and how it tends to move the market line. The MLB regular season runs from late March to September, followed by the postseason and the World Series in October.

Runs scored and allowed

Average runs per game for and against — the base of every run-differential power rating. In baseball the run differential predicts the future record far better than wins, because one-run games are close to coin flips. A team with a good record and an even differential is usually priced by the market as an average team, which surprises people reading the standings and explains a shorter-than-expected moneyline.

Starting pitching ERA and FIP

ERA is runs allowed per nine innings; FIP strips out fielding and sequencing luck to estimate what the pitcher controls — strikeouts, walks and home runs. The probable starter is the single largest input to an MLB moneyline, and the gap between ERA and FIP tells you whether a starter’s results are likely to hold. A late scratch moves the line more than any other baseball event.

Team OPS

OPS — on-base plus slugging — summarises a team’s ability to reach base and hit for power in one number, and it is the hitting statistic Sportslyx reads for each side alongside runs scored. A high-OPS team against a starter whose FIP is worse than his ERA is one of the clearest matchup edges in the data, and the game total responds to it more than the moneyline does. Platoon splits against left- and right-handed pitching are a real refinement an analyst thinks about, but they are not part of the data tier Sportslyx ingests.

Recent form

Results, runs for and against and the starters used over the last ten games. Baseball form is noisier than in any other major sport because of the pitching rotation; a 7–3 stretch built on the top two starters says little about a game started by the fifth. Sportslyx shows form next to who pitched each game so the sample is read correctly.

Head-to-head record

Recent meetings between the two clubs, with the score and date of each, weighted toward the current season. In baseball a season series is up to nineteen games started by different pitchers, so the record itself predicts little — a 10–9 series is what chance produces. Sportslyx shows it on the game page for context, and the breakdown reads it as a note beside the market-derived probability, never as an adjustment to it.

Player level

MLB Player Statistics

Player numbers behind the game page and the breakdown. Volume and deployment come first, efficiency second — over a short window the first two are stable and the third mostly is not.

Pitcher strikeouts, outs and earned runs

For each probable starter: strikeouts, outs recorded and earned runs allowed per start, with the recent trend. These are three of the pitcher props the public feed prices and Sportslyx grades from the official box score. Strikeouts depend on the opposing team’s strikeout rate as much as on the pitcher; outs recorded is a question of efficiency and pitch count; earned runs follow the ERA-versus-FIP gap more than the last start does.

Hits and walks allowed

Hits and walks allowed per start for the probable pitcher — the two remaining pitcher props on the public feed. Walks describe command and are the more stable of the two; hits allowed swing with the defense and with batted-ball luck, so one high hit total says less than a walk rate does. Both are graded from the official box score once the game is final.

Batter hits, walks, runs and RBIs

Per-game hitting production for the batters the public feed prices — hits, walks, runs scored and RBIs, the four batter props Sportslyx grades. A hitter’s line moves with the pitching matchup more than with last week’s hot streak, so the current line is read next to recent results rather than on its own. Prop lines are half-numbers, so a graded read is a win or a loss — or a void for a player who did not appear.

Form and situation

MLB Team Performance & Recent Form

MLB form is read over the last ten games but always next to the pitcher who started each one. A rotation cycles every five days, so a team’s recent record is really five small samples, and a losing week can mean nothing more than facing three aces in a row. Sportslyx shows recent results, runs scored and allowed and the probable starter for the game in front of you.

Rest and location matter less in baseball than in the other team sports but are not zero. Home advantage is the smallest of the majors at roughly four percent, and long road trips across time zones show up in run scoring. Bullpen fatigue is real and an analyst should keep it in mind, but reliever workload is not part of the data tier Sportslyx ingests — the probable starters, recent form and each team’s run scoring and pitching numbers are what the breakdown reads.

Market favourite, de-vigged

The win probability on every Sportslyx surface is market-derived. This is the arithmetic on today’s public prices: the two moneylines are turned into implied probabilities, the bookmaker’s hold is removed, and the favourite’s fair probability is what remains. Nothing here is a Sportslyx read — it is the market’s.

Two-way de-vig of the published moneyline pair. The hold is the bookmaker’s margin; removing it proportionally gives the fair probability shown in the product.

Series history

MLB Head-to-Head Records

Season series records in baseball are among the least predictive numbers in sports. Two teams may meet nineteen times in a year with a different starter on the mound in every game, and a 10–9 series is what chance produces. Sportslyx shows recent meetings on the game page for context, not as an input to the probability.

What does transfer is the pitching matchup: the same starter facing the same club twice in a month tells you more than the series record does. The head-to-head record on the game page lists the recent meetings with their scores and dates, and the breakdown reads it as a note beside the market-derived probability. Practical guide

How to Read MLB Statistics

Begin with the probable starters; nothing else in baseball moves the line as much. Compare each starter’s ERA with his FIP: a large gap in either direction usually corrects over the next month. Second, read team OPS and runs scored against the quality of the starter on the mound rather than against the league average. Third, keep the bullpen in mind — a fresh pen changes the seventh, eighth and ninth innings — while remembering that reliever workload is not on the page, so that judgement is yours to make.

Fourth, treat recent form as five separate samples, one per rotation slot — a team is not hot or cold, its Tuesday starter is. Fifth, remember that the ballpark shapes the total: the same two teams score differently in Denver and San Francisco, and because park factors are not ingested, the market total is the only place that adjustment appears on the page. Sixth, remember that home advantage in baseball is small and that one-run records regress.

Finally, the win probability on each page is de-vigged from the moneyline; use the statistics to understand it, and treat any stat that does not move your estimate of that probability as background.

MLB Statistics FAQ

Why is FIP shown next to ERA?

ERA includes fielding and sequencing luck; FIP estimates what a pitcher controls. When they diverge, the results are likely to move toward FIP over the next few starts, which matters for the moneyline.

How does Sportslyx handle a late starting-pitcher change?

The probable starter is read from the public feed on game day. If the starter changes after a breakdown was generated, the market line moves and the win probability on the card follows it; the breakdown text itself is pre-generated and cached, so it can still describe the earlier starter, and data can lag the announcement.

Are MLB player props graded from the box score?

Yes. Pitcher strikeouts, outs recorded, walks allowed, earned runs and hits allowed, and batter hits, walks, runs and RBIs are settled from the official box score. A player who did not appear is a void, not a loss, and prop lines are always half-numbers, so there is no push.

Does Sportslyx adjust for the ballpark?

Not as a data input. Park factors are not ingested; the breakdown works from the probable starters, recent form, team run scoring and pitching statistics, the market lines and head-to-head history. The market total already reflects the venue, so the park is something to keep in mind when comparing run-scoring averages to the total, not a number on the page.

What is the run line?

A 1.5-run spread. The favourite must win by two or more; the underdog covers by winning or by losing by one. Run-line prices depend on how often a team wins close games, which is why run differential is read next to the win–loss record rather than instead of it.
