NHL Statistics & Team Performance
Goals for and against, shot volume, power play and penalty kill, goaltending and recent form — the statistics behind every Sportslyx NHL breakdown.
Team level
NHL Team Statistics
The team-level numbers Sportslyx reads before every NHL game: what each one measures, why it matters in hockey, and how it tends to move the market line. The NHL regular season runs from October to April, followed by the Stanley Cup playoffs through June.
Goals for and against
Average goals scored and conceded per game — the base of every hockey power rating. Goal differential predicts future results better than points in the standings because so many NHL games are decided by one goal or in a shootout. The market prices differential, so a team winning coin-flip games looks stronger in the table than in the moneyline, and the gap is visible on the stats page.
Shots for and against
Shots taken and shots conceded per game, from the public box score. Shot-based numbers are more predictive than goals over short windows because scoring is streaky and goaltending is streakier: a team outshot every night while winning is usually priced by the market as an average team, whatever the standings say. Corsi, Fenwick and expected goals refine the same idea by counting attempts or weighting chance quality. Corsi and Fenwick are not ingested, and no shot-level xG for the game is; the NHL package carries shots for and against from the box score plus a season-level team expected-goals share from a public model (MoneyPuck), which the breakdown reads alongside goaltending.
Power play and penalty kill
Conversion rate with a man advantage and kill rate when short-handed. Special teams decide a large share of NHL games, and both rates respond quickly to injuries on the first unit or a change of goaltender. Totals move when two strong power plays meet a pair of undisciplined teams, and the breakdown reads penalty-minute trends for exactly that reason.
Goaltending save rate
Save percentage for each goaltender, at even strength and overall, with recent starts. Goaltending explains more single-game variance than any other position in team sports, and the confirmed starter can shift the moneyline by several cents. Sportslyx reads the expected starter from the public feed and flags when the start is still unconfirmed.
Recent form
Results, goals for and against and shots for and against over the last ten games, with the goaltender used in each. Hockey form should be read through the shot numbers rather than the results, because a team can lose five straight while outplaying every opponent. The breakdown notes when results and process disagree, which in hockey is often.
Rest situation
Days since the last game and whether tonight is the second of a back-to-back. Rest is one of the clearest situational effects in the NHL, and it interacts with goaltending: a back-to-back usually means the backup starts, which is often the real reason the line moves. Travel across time zones adds to it, especially on long western road trips.
Player level
NHL Player Statistics
Player numbers behind the game page and the breakdown. Volume and deployment come first, efficiency second — over a short window the first two are stable and the third mostly is not.
Goals and assists
Per-game scoring for the top-six forwards and top-pair defencemen, with the power-play share. Point production is streaky, so the underlying shot rate and ice time explain the next game better than the last five do. Any player projection follows deployment first and production second.
Shots on goal
Shots per game and per minute for each skater. Shot volume is the most stable individual stat in hockey and the base of any shot projection; a top-line winger against a team that allows shots from the slot is the classic setup the breakdown looks for.
Time on ice
Average ice time at even strength and on special teams. Ice time is deployment, and deployment drives every counting stat; a forward promoted to the first power-play unit sees his projection move before his production does.
Goalie starts and save rate
Recent starts, save percentage in those starts and the expected starter for tonight. The starting goaltender is the single biggest input to an NHL moneyline, and a confirmation an hour before puck drop often moves the line more than any team stat.
Form and situation
NHL Team Performance & Recent Form
NHL form is read over the last ten games through shots for and against rather than through the results column. Scoring in hockey is low and streaky, and goaltending swings games, so a 3–7 stretch in which a team out-shoots its opponents is more encouraging than a 7–3 stretch built on a .940 save percentage. Sportslyx shows results, goals for and against, shots and the goaltender who started each game.
Rest and the goaltending decision are read together. A team on the second night of a back-to-back usually starts its backup, and that combination — tired skaters plus the second goalie — is the situational effect the market prices most heavily in hockey. Home advantage is modest, around five to six percent, and slightly larger for teams with long travel.
Today’s NHL games with public lines are listed below. Each game page carries the last-ten record, the shot numbers and the expected starting goaltenders used in the breakdown.
Upcoming NHL games with lines
No NHL games are on the board for the next three days. In season that usually means a scheduled break or a feed refresh in progress; out of season the board fills again when the public schedule is published. The NHL regular season runs from October to April, followed by the Stanley Cup playoffs through June.
See the NHL games page for the next scheduled slate, or the NHL analytics hub for the season overview.
Series history
NHL Head-to-Head Records
Head-to-head records in the NHL carry little signal. Teams meet two to four times a season, often with different goaltenders in net, and a shootout loss counts the same as a blowout in the series record. Sportslyx shows the recent meetings on each game page for context, weighted toward the current season.
The parts worth keeping are structural — a team that consistently generates chances against a particular defensive system, or a divisional rivalry with a history of penalties and high totals. The breakdown treats those as notes beside the market-derived probability, not as adjustments to it. Open the game pages for the series and the current line together.

Practical guide
How to Read NHL Statistics
Start with the goaltender. The expected starter and his recent save percentage explain more of an NHL line than any team statistic, so read them first and note whether the start is confirmed. Second, judge a team by shots for and against, not by goals: scoring is streaky and shot-based numbers stabilise faster. Third, check special teams — power-play and penalty-kill rates decide a large share of games and change quickly with injuries.
Fourth, read form through the last ten games but look at who was in net for each result, and discount a streak that depends on a hot goalie. Fifth, read rest and travel together with the goalie decision, because the second night of a back-to-back is usually the backup’s start. Sixth, remember that overtime and shootout results count in full for moneyline grading, which is why the market’s probability includes them.
Finally, use the de-vigged win probability on the page as your baseline and the statistics to understand it — a stat that does not shift the probability is background.
NHL Statistics FAQ
What are Corsi, Fenwick and expected goals?
Corsi counts all shot attempts, Fenwick leaves out attempts blocked by a defender before they reach the goalie, and expected goals weight each attempt by its scoring chance. Corsi and Fenwick are not ingested, and no per-game shot-level xG is; the NHL pages show shots for and against from the public box score, and the package adds a season-level team expected-goals share from a public model (MoneyPuck) that the breakdown reads alongside goaltending.
How does Sportslyx know who is starting in net?
The expected starter is read from the public feed on game day and marked as unconfirmed until the team announces it. A late change moves the market line and the win probability with it; the page notes when data may lag the announcement.
Do overtime and shootout results count?
Yes for moneyline reads — the result including overtime and the shootout is what the market settles on, and Sportslyx grades the same way. Puck-line and total reads use the final score as recorded.
How much does a back-to-back matter in the NHL?
It is one of the strongest situational effects in hockey, mostly because it usually means the backup goaltender starts. The market prices it, and the stats page shows rest days for both teams so the effect is visible.
Which NHL player stats feed the breakdown?
Goals and assists, shots on goal, time on ice and goaltender starts and save rate, taken from the public box scores and refreshed on game day. Player-prop reads are an MLB-only feature; no NHL prop lines are priced or graded.
