NHL Analytics & Game Predictions
An NHL board that starts in the crease: AI game breakdowns built around the confirmed goaltender, market-derived win probabilities, puck-line and total context, and a graded season record.
Season note. The NHL regular season runs from October to April, followed by the Stanley Cup playoffs through June. Times on this page are UTC.
NHL Game Analysis
Hockey is the sport where one player changes the line the most, so the NHL breakdown starts with the confirmed starting goaltender and the save rate behind each net. It then reads shots for and against, special-teams rates and the rest situation, and explains the moneyline, puck line and total against those numbers.
What the breakdown reads
- starting goaltender
- rest and back-to-backs
- special teams
- shot metrics
- market lines and movement
Markets covered
- moneyline
- puck line
- game total
Each breakdown carries a data-quality tier — rich, partial or weak — based on how much of the list on the left the feed actually delivered for the game. The tier is passed to the language model so the write-up hedges when the package is thin, and it is the first thing to check when a read looks off. Read more about how the AI analysis is produced.
AI NHL Predictions
The win probability on every NHL game page is derived from the market, not from the language model. The prices are converted into implied probabilities, the bookmaker’s margin is removed so the set sums to 100%, and the result is shown as each side’s fair win chance.
NHL prices are among the tightest in team sports — favourites rarely exceed 65% — so a small move in the line is a meaningful change in probability. The page shows the market’s number rather than rounding it into a verdict.
What the AI adds is the explanation, not the number. The breakdown reads the same data package the statistics section shows — form, availability, head-to-head, rest and the line, as far as the hockey feed provides them — and writes out why the market sits where it does and what it may be underweighting. A data-quality tier is attached — rich, partial or weak, depending on how much of that package the feed delivered — and the read is published before the game starts. It is graded from the official result afterwards, and nothing is edited after the fact. AI breakdowns are pre-generated for the upcoming slate and cached; the win probability on the card is derived from the current market line. The write-up is not rewritten when the line moves.
A probability is a statistical estimate. A 65% favourite is expected to lose roughly one game in three; a month in which it loses more than that is not evidence that the number was wrong, and a month in which it loses fewer is not evidence that it was right. The prediction-tracking table further down this page and the Pick Tracker exist so that the method can be judged on volume, not on memory.
The full board — every game on the slate with its probability and status — lives on the NHL predictions page.
NHL Statistics
The NHL statistics section is organised around the categories the breakdown actually reads. Every number comes from the public scoreboard and box-score feeds and the per-game data package built on game day; where a category is not provided for a competition, the page says so rather than showing a blank.
Goals for and against
Scoring margin over the season and the recent window, shown per game so teams with different schedules compare cleanly.
Shots for and against
Shots taken and allowed per game for both teams, which the breakdown reads alongside results because a team can win three straight while being outshot in all three. It is the volume read of team quality Sportslyx carries per game: shot-attempt share is not part of the feed, and no shot-level xG for the game is — a season-level team expected-goals share from a public model (MoneyPuck) is attached to the NHL package instead.
Power play and penalty kill
Conversion and kill rates for both special-teams units; the gap between two teams here often explains a total.
Goaltending save rate
Save percentage for the confirmed starter and the backup, because the identity of the goalie is the biggest single input to a hockey line.
Recent form
Results over the last ten games, shown as context rather than as a predictor — a hot streak changes the market more than it changes the team.
Rest situation
Days since the last game and back-to-back flags for both sides — one of the inputs that most often explains a line that looks off.
NHL Matchups
Recent form in the NHL is read through shot volume as well as results, because a team can win three straight while being outshot in all three. Head-to-head history is used for pace and physicality context, and rest is weighted heavily: the second night of a back-to-back usually means a backup goalie, which is often the whole story of the line.
Form, head-to-head and rest are inputs to the breakdown, not the verdict. The market line is the anchor, and the matchup context is what the analysis uses to explain agreement or disagreement with it — a read that contradicts the line has to say which of these inputs the market appears to be missing, and by how much.
Every game page shows the matchup view in full: the participants’ recent results, the head-to-head record where one exists, the schedule context and the public line, drawn from the same data package the AI reads. Start from the NHL games list or from today’s board below.
NHL Team Performance
Team profiles refresh daily from the schedule feed and hold the crest, abbreviation and display name. Record, goals for and against, recent results and the confirmed goaltender live on each game page, built from the per-game package, because a hockey number only means something next to who is in net against whom.
Team profiles are rebuilt from the schedule feed every day, but they hold identity, not statistics: the crest, the abbreviation and the display name that keep a team consistent across game pages, the pick tracker and the breakdown. The performance numbers — record, recent results, the next scheduled game and the market’s number for it — are assembled on each game page from the per-game data package, because they only mean something next to an opponent and a date.
Two things the performance view does not do. It does not project a team’s next result; that is the breakdown’s job, and it is graded. And it does not backfill history the feed never delivered: a team with a short record is shown with a short record. The NHL team directory lists every team on the board with its profile, and each card opens that team’s upcoming games.
NHL Player Statistics
Skater and goaltender numbers feed the breakdown’s read of the matchup — a backup in net or a top-line injury changes the line more than any team statistic. Player props are covered for MLB only: Sportslyx does not publish NHL prop reads, and the graded record is the moneyline.
Goals and assists
Per-game scoring production for regular players, with recent-window averages next to the season number.
Shots on goal
Shot volume per game — a useful read of a player’s role and the number behind any shots-based discussion in the breakdown.
Time on ice
Minutes per game at even strength and on special teams, which sets the volume behind every skater number.
Goalie starts and save rate
Recent starts and save percentage for each goaltender, so a back-to-back that forces the backup is visible before puck drop.
NHL Prediction Tracking
Published NHL reads settled in each of the last 3 calendar months (UTC). The published NHL read is the moneyline favourite, graded on the final result including overtime and the shootout, which matches how the market settles the game.
No NHL reads have settled in the last 3 calendar months. The NHL regular season runs from October to April, followed by the Stanley Cup playoffs through June. The rows fill in automatically as soon as the board publishes and grades its first games of the season; nothing is entered by hand.
The record for every sport — by month, with hit rate and ROI at a flat stake — is kept on the Pick Tracker.
Today’s NHL Games
Every NHL game on today’s board (UTC) in start-time order, with the public spread, total and moneyline where the feed provides them. The NHL regular season runs from October to April, followed by the Stanley Cup playoffs through June.
There are no NHL games on today’s board (UTC). Either the schedule has a gap — common in every sport — or the feed has not returned the day yet; the board refreshes several times a day and fills in on its own.
Upcoming games appear in the next section as soon as the feed lists them, and the NHL games page keeps the full schedule window.
Upcoming NHL Games
Games scheduled over the next 3 days on the public feed, after today. Lines are shown as soon as the market posts them; games without a line yet are listed with their start time only.
Nothing further is listed for NHL in the next 3 days on the public schedule feed. The NHL regular season runs from October to April, followed by the Stanley Cup playoffs through June.
The NHL games page shows the widest schedule window available, and the sports index lists which boards have events today.
NHL Analytics FAQ
How much does the starting goalie matter in the NHL analysis?
A great deal. The confirmed starter is one of the first inputs the model reads, alongside rest and special teams, because goaltending explains a large share of single-game variance.
Does Sportslyx cover the puck line and totals?
Yes. Moneyline, puck line and game total are covered for every NHL game on the board.
How are overtime and shootout games graded?
Moneyline reads are graded on the final result including overtime and shootout, matching how the market settles the game.
Where can I check past NHL results?
The Pick Tracker publishes every settled NHL read with monthly hit rate and ROI.
