NFL Statistics & Team Performance
Team performance, recent form, head-to-head records and the situational numbers that drive every Sportslyx NFL breakdown — refreshed from the schedule feed on game days.
Team level
NFL Team Statistics
The team-level numbers Sportslyx reads before every NFL game: what each one measures, why it matters in football, and how it tends to move the market line. The NFL regular season runs from September to January, followed by the playoffs and the Super Bowl in February.
Offensive efficiency
Yards per play, points per drive and success rate strip out volume and show how much an offense produces per snap. In the NFL the gap between a top-five and a bottom-five offense is worth several points of spread, and efficiency is more stable week to week than raw yardage. When a team’s efficiency changes because of a quarterback swap or an offensive-line injury, the spread and the total both move before kickoff.
Defensive efficiency
Yards allowed per play, points allowed per drive and pressure rate describe how a defense holds up independent of how many snaps it faces. Defensive efficiency explains much of the game total: two efficient defenses push the number down even when both offenses are strong. Markets react to pass-rush and secondary injuries here first, because they change per-play outcomes rather than volume.
Points for and against
The simplest scoreboard summary — average points scored and allowed — anchors every power rating. Point differential predicts future results better than the win–loss record, because a 5–2 team winning by a field goal each week is not the same as one winning by three touchdowns. Lines lean on differential, so a strong record with a thin margin usually carries a shorter spread than fans expect.
Turnover margin
Interceptions and fumbles gained minus those lost. Turnovers swing NFL games more than any single play type, but the margin is noisy: recovering a loose ball is close to a coin flip. Teams with an extreme margin tend to regress, so the market gives them less credit than their record implies. A team living on takeaways can look better in the standings than in the spread.
Third-down and red-zone rates
Third-down conversion rate measures the ability to extend drives; red-zone rate measures whether trips inside the 20 end in touchdowns or field goals. Both sit between efficiency and points and explain why two teams with similar yardage score differently. They move totals more than spreads: a poor red-zone offense caps scoring, while a defense that forces field goals lowers the expected number.
Rest and travel
Days since the last game, short weeks after Thursday football, bye-week returns and cross-country travel. Rest is a situational factor: a team coming off a bye against one on a short week gets a measurable lift in the historical data. Markets bake it in as roughly a point on the spread, and the breakdown flags it whenever the rest gap between the two teams is large.
Player level
NFL Player Statistics
Player numbers behind the game page and the breakdown. Volume and deployment come first, efficiency second — over a short window the first two are stable and the third mostly is not.
Passing yards and touchdowns
Per-game passing volume and scoring for the quarterback, split by opponent and location. Passing output drives the game total more than any other position, and the matchup against a pass defense’s efficiency is the first thing the total reflects when it opens.
Rushing attempts and yards
Carries and yards for the lead backs, with attempts often more predictive than yards because volume is decided by game script. A team expected to lead hands the ball off late; an underdog throws. That is why rushing volume follows the spread almost as closely as it follows the runner’s talent.
Receptions and targets
Targets show how often a receiver is the intended pass, receptions show how often it connects. Target share is the most stable receiving stat week to week and the foundation of any receiving projection; a change in the depth chart or a cornerback matchup changes it more than last week’s yardage does.
Form and situation
NFL Team Performance & Recent Form
Recent form for an NFL team is measured over a short window — the last three to five games — because a seventeen-game season leaves little room for long averages, and the roster that played in September is rarely the roster in December. Sportslyx shows results, points for and against and the margin in each of those games, and the breakdown reads them next to the season-long efficiency numbers rather than instead of them.
Rest and location are read alongside form. A short week after Thursday football, a return from a bye or a west-to-east early kickoff each shift expectations by roughly a point on the spread in the historical data. Home advantage in the NFL has narrowed over the last decade but has not vanished; it is smaller in domes and larger in cold-weather stadiums late in the year.
The list below is today’s NFL slate with public lines — the same games that receive a breakdown. Recent form, rest and home/away splits for each side sit on the game page.

Market favourite, de-vigged
The win probability on every Sportslyx surface is market-derived. This is the arithmetic on today’s public prices: the two moneylines are turned into implied probabilities, the bookmaker’s hold is removed, and the favourite’s fair probability is what remains. Nothing here is a Sportslyx read — it is the market’s.
| Game | Prices (away / home) | Hold | Market favourite | Fair win probability |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| New England Patriots vs Seattle Seahawks | +142 / -170 | 4.3% | Seattle Seahawks | 60% |
| San Francisco 49ers vs Los Angeles Rams | +154 / -185 | 4.3% | Los Angeles Rams | 62% |
Series history
NFL Head-to-Head Records
Head-to-head history is the stat people ask for first and the one that predicts least. NFL rosters turn over by roughly a third every season, coaching staffs change, and divisional rivals meet twice a year at most — so a 6–2 record in the series usually describes teams that no longer exist. Sportslyx shows the recent meetings on each game page for context, weighted toward the last two seasons.
What does carry from a previous meeting is structural: a defensive scheme that handled a particular quarterback, a stadium that suppresses scoring, or a division rivalry that historically lands close to the number. The breakdown treats those as notes, not as inputs to the win probability, which comes from the market line. The individual game pages show the recent series and the current line side by side.

Practical guide
How to Read NFL Statistics
Start with the line, not the stats. The point spread and total already encode the market’s view of both teams, so the useful question is whether a statistic explains the number or argues with it. Second, prefer per-play and per-drive rates over totals: yards per play and points per drive survive a change in tempo, while raw yardage rewards teams that were trailing and threw forty times.
Third, weight the last month over the season when the roster has changed and the season over the last month when it has not — a quarterback injury resets the sample, a bad half does not. Fourth, treat turnover margin and the record in close games as noise until proven otherwise; both regress. Fifth, check rest and venue before comparing two form lines, because a short week and a long flight change what a 27–17 result means.
Finally, read the market-derived win probability as the baseline and the AI breakdown as the argument around it. If the numbers do not change your view of the probability, they are colour, not evidence.
NFL Statistics FAQ
Which NFL team statistics does Sportslyx publish?
Offensive and defensive efficiency, points for and against, turnover margin, third-down and red-zone rates and the rest situation, refreshed from the public scoreboard feed on game days and shown on each game page alongside recent form.
Where does the NFL data come from?
The primary source is the public ESPN scoreboard feed for schedules, scores, base lines and box scores, with optional odds enrichment. Team profiles are refreshed daily. Data can be delayed or incomplete on busy Sundays, and the pages say so when it is.
Why show a market-derived win probability instead of a model score?
The moneyline pair is de-vigged into a fair probability. The closing market is the best-calibrated public forecast available and it is what the company board uses, so the number on the stats page and the number in the breakdown are the same number.
Do NFL player props use these statistics?
No. Player-prop reads are an MLB-only feature. NFL breakdowns read team and player statistics — passing, rushing and receiving volume, target share — as context for the spread and the game total, but no NFL prop lines are priced, tracked or graded on Sportslyx.
How far back does NFL recent form go?
Three to five games by default. Longer windows are shown where the roster has been stable, but a quarterback change or a bye resets what the recent results mean, and the breakdown says when that has happened.
